The Worm Moon

March’s Full Moon

Now we approach the Worm Moon, the Full Moon of March!  The Moon will be at its full phase on March 7, 2023, at 12:40 GMT.

The name makes me giggle somewhat! Worms? Really!? And for many years, it was thought this name referred to the earthworms that appear as the soil warms in spring and provides fodder for the birds. However, research has shown that the name references beetle larvae which start to emerge from the thawing bark of trees and other winter hideouts at this time 2023.

This provides a wonderful blueprint for our own lives, the winter is diminishing and the days are growing lighter (although perhaps not warmer) and we can move away from a hibernation, a time of rest into a time of creation, expansion and thus of growth.

And as we pursue our Hero’s Journey, our theme for 2023, it feels right to pause to take stock of how far we have come, not just in 2023 but from before we even consciously set off on our journeys. And so, I would like to invite you to take a moment to give yourself a bit of a “well done” and to pause to congratulate yourselves in this. It may not feel like it at all, but I truly believe that this is the way we might go all the time. At every moment, every day, we did our best. Whether it is something we may want to beat ourselves up after the event – if we could have done better or different, we would have done.

This may be hard to see or believe but if you feel yourself heading towards a hostile thought towards something you did or said or thought, then try to open a corner of your mind to this concept – that you did your best. This is not something that we readily do. Conditioning, culture, shame, and awkwardness often but also blame, judgment, self-recrimination. Our society favours the self-deprecation, and the vibration of this approach reverberates in our bodies.

This doesn’t preclude the need for humility, as there will undoubtedly be times where we know we would have preferred to have made different decisions, and have done / said / thought things in a way that does not align with our integrity. For these moments, we can open ourselves up to kindness and compassion to ourselves and maybe seek such from another.

There are a number of reasons why it is of great advantage to recognise ourselves. – Firstly, we cannot wholly recognise the achievements of others if we cannot see and recognise the beauty of ourselves. We need each other and we all have something to offer to the world.

Secondly, by acknowledging what we have achieved, we give fuel to the fire so to speak. In doing so, we nourish and nurture our gifts, which is particularly timely during this season of spring.

Thirdly, in doing so, we are automatically acknowledging the role of the giver of gifts – The Divine, Source, Great Spirit, The Universe – however you name it. And this moves us further into gratitude and expansion.

Finally, we find a much happier life, enjoying being ourselves more and more, which is always welcome. As we move through the Hero’s Journey, why not make it as sweet and pleasurable as we can and build up our own resources. These will support us navigate choppy waters and move through such with grace and ease.
